empressissi™ is pleased to offer this all original and historic, interesting pocket watch made in Switzerland, wholesaled by a UK agent and retailed by a Constantinople (Today's Istanbul) famous Armenian retailer MAKOULIAN.
This watch is part of a large and mostly impressive collection of a retired IAF pilot that we are delighted to offer for sale in our website. In 2016 we serviced a small portion of his collection that was later auctioned at Christie's Geneve. We are now pleased to offer the substantial part of the collection for sale; these include a large selection of silver pocket watches - repeaters, chronographs, Hunter-cases (Savonettes) and open faces, most complex and interesting antique Swiss and American pocket watches, to name a few.
Makoulian was an Armenian retailer who resided in Constantinople (Today Istanbul) and specialized in import of Swiss made pocket watches. Many of the watches carried Ottoman style decorations and memorabilia on the face and the majority of the movements came from Serkisoff/Zenith/Longines/Billodes in large calibers, either open-faces or savonette with typical Ottoman style where the crown is at 12.
This watch houses a large key set/key wind KWKS gilt caliber in overall excellent condition and running properly which appears to be an upgraded Billodes with 21 jewels. The movement is cased in a large and heavy, thick gauge 0.875 silver with beautiful turned engine decorations, original bow, split crown and mint crystal, hallmarked for London 1895. The case has an interesting split crown feature that opens either of the front/back hinges to allow setting/winding on the back or observing the time on the front. The case also features an internal dust cover made of silver. All hinges are tight and secure and the net weight of the silver content in this case is 56 grams. This watch is supplied with a key.
The dial is a factory original enamel white with most elegant Indian numerals in Roman style and original set of hands.
